The story begins as you play as Grayson Hunt, leader the of the Dead Echo squad. You have been flying through the galaxy for the past few years pirating and plundering, with a hangover the entire time just like any good pirate. The whole time you have been looking for the great General Sarrano to exact your revenge. After a quick playable flashback, that had me going "what am I doing...wait...oh my god...yep I'm really doing this." You find out the the good Gereral has bascically been using you and your squad as assasins, killing innocents. This doesn't sit well with Grayson and he and his crew go awol. Flash forward to present day, after a drunken encounter with the Federations prize war ship which has Sarrano at the helm, you are crash landing on Stygia. It's a very colorful planet with some very intersting locals that range from electro fireflies, man eating plants, to the "hekaton" class giants.
By Ryan Fielder As I was awaiting Bulletstorm, I felt it could be a fun, but it had a high upset alert. I was scared that there was going to be no story, to many distasteful jokes, and a little to much emphasis on gunplay. After having played through multiple times, I can officially say there is no upset here. Just the right amount of humor, a believable story, and plenty of good times to have. Bulletstorm has taken the first person shooter genre by the balls(literally), squeezed out innovation, and upped the ante for all shooters. Buckle up for dick jokes The story begins as you play as Grayson Hunt, leader the of the Dead Echo squad. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh The game really begins here, as your best frien Ishi Sato is basically dead from the crash landing. You run out to get some engine charges from ejected escape pods, that could be used to save Ishi's life. Little bit down the road and you meet your new best friend, the energy leash. You get it off a squad member of Final Echo, General Sarrano's replacement team for the defective Dead Echo. This is a huge part of gameplay once you nuerologically bind the leash to yourself. You use this tool to grab enemies or other objects in the environment and bring them too you, then whatever you leashed gets suspended in mid-air for a brief time allowing you to shoot, kick, incinerate, castrate or decapitate to your hearts desire. She is a time paradox Once you get back and save Ishi's life you find that he has changed. Half of his brain is now being taken over by computer logic and he bacically sees no reason to let you live. Becasue of Grayson's drunken descision to fly his ship through the federation's ship engine caused everyone to crash land on this forsaken planet. Especialy since Gray could have just flown away, but his thirst for revenge had him playing around with everone's life. One can understand why Ishi would want to squeeze Gray's juggular with his new robotic limbs. After some quick talking and a short event, Hunt makes a deal with Ishi, to find General Sarrano, not to kill him, but to make friends with him and fly off of the fun, new, planet they have just arrived on. Along your path of destruction you meet one more enemy turned ally, Trishka, commander of Final Echo. She is a girl that you saw in the flashback section, but now shes all grown up. The story bacically takes you through Stygia to find Sarrano so you can take your reven...I mean, ally up with him and get off of the rock. How you get there is through some of the most hysterical banter, and great gameplay I have experienced for a long time. Fancy killing gets you cash I feel as if Bulletstorm was made by the team at Epic, but the story was told by the love child of George Carlin, Lewis Black, and Chris Rock. I was laughing out loud the entire time I was playing. From Ishi's power struggle inside of his head between wanting to help or kill his best friend. To the the hillarious Sarrano who is the hardened military man, telling people to come sit on ol' pappy's lap. Even Trishka get's in some lines with Hunt, "You come any closer, I'll kill your dicks." Gray responds, "You'll kill my dick? What does that even mean? I'll kill your dick! How bout that?" The irony and luckiness of Grayson is also hillarious. At one part of the game, Trishka tells Hunt to stay quiet. What does he do? Knocks down a sign, which ignites a car, which knocks over some ruble, and brings down an entire building accross the street. "At least you don't have to whisper anymore,' says Hunt. One more example is later in the game there is a giant "hecaton" chasing you. Basically its what you would get if Godzilla and T-rex went out on a date, had a baby and injected it with steroids. As it's chasing you Trish says "What did you do to this thing, kill it's babies?" Coincidentially earlier in the game you are in a giant cave and the only way out is through small building sized eggs. Rest in peace Waggleton All jokes aside, the game would be nothing without something that the player actually had a hand in. That is where the skill shots come in. The leveling up in this game is kill things in the craziest way you can think of, and we will reward you. Shoot a guy in the balls so he drops to his knees, then kick his face in. Thats called mercy, here's a hundred points. Leash some guys into the air, shoot one with and explosive sniper bullet, and guide him into two more guys before it explodes. We call that Letterbomb, here is 250 points a kill. You see that electric fence, kick an enemy into it and its called shocker. While you do all this your leash that you stole earlier keeps track of your ability to "kill with skill." So the leash keeps track and rewards the best soldiers with better weapons and ammo. Kind of a survival of the fittest. Just use your leash to link up to a drop shop located allover the planet. There is a good amount of guns to play with too. All of which have a devastating secondary fire mode, which the shots are pretty expensive. So the more you kill, the more fun you get to have. There is also a level in which you get to pilot a remote controlled "hekaton." This thing rieks havoc on anything and everything in its path shooting lasers from it's eyeballs. Grayson gets a little attached to it and calls him Waggleton P. Tallylicker. I can honestly say that this level was the most fun I have had playing a game for years. Kill with skill, together The game could really be a stand alone game with just the story, skill shots, and all of the humor. Epic decided that wasn't enough though. There is two other modes of play, echos and anarchy. Echo's mode is a single player game that puts you in a level with a few guns and a little time....What kind of skill shots can you come up with? At the end of the level you get the online leaderboards around the world, and with your friends so you can see who gets bragging rights. Then there is the multiplayer Anarchy mode, which is Gears of War's Horde mode with skill shots. You and three other people have to work together to get the highest score and advance to the next level. Sure you can kill all of the enemies easily, but if you don't work together for the skill shots you'll never make it to the next round. All in all, since I've got this game, I have played through multiple times and laughed even harder the second time through. Its a great story, the only downside is it can be beat in about seven hours, more on the harder difficulties. And the secondary modes give this game endless life. If you havn't checked it out yet, leash over a copy and make your living room rain down ammunition with Bulletstorm.
