Stacking is the story of the smallest stacking doll on a quest to save his family from child labor imprisonment. Charlie, the youngest and smallest of the chimney sweep family, learns that an evil industrialist, the Baron, is using the older members of the Blackmore (Charlie’s) family as cheap labor to toil on his comically baroque vessels. Charlie, as the smallest stacking doll, is able to jump into and take control of a doll that is one size larger than him. He is able to continue stacking into larger dolls one size at a time until he reaches the largest doll size. Through his ability to “bend other dolls to his will” he can solve the Barron’s puzzles and save his family from servitude.
By Griff Hoffmann Stacking is an enjoyable twist on the classic Adventure genre. The unique stacking mechanic sets it apart from anything else available. The story of the smallest Russian nesting doll in a charming lost things world make this game memorable and worth investing in. He can bend people to his will Stacking is the story of the smallest stacking doll on a quest to save his family from child labor imprisonment. Through his ability to “bend other dolls to his will” he can solve the Barron’s puzzles and save his family from servitude. She probably bends things too Stacking puts a new twist on the word term action adventure. The multistage puzzle solving retains the classic Adventure feel but the curve-ball comes with the progression. Each puzzle has more than three ways to solve it and each puzzle only needs to be solved once, so progressing down the critical can be done very quickly. What this also does is allows more time to be spent exploring and interacting with every character in the environment to decipher different solutions. This allowing for multiple solutions gives Stacking a more open-ended action feel that most Adventure games to date. Taking a growler in the thunder mug The puzzles revolve around disrupting the normal flow of the world. Charlie is tasked with getting to a location that is inaccessible and in order to get to the location he must throw a wrench into the clockwork world he exists in. In order to cause this chaos Charlie must jump inside of other stacking dolls that have unique abilities from a farting fat man to a growling grizzly bear. By using these dolls to stink up a VIP lounge or cause hysteria on a ocean liner Charlie is eventually able to expose child labor as cruel and save his family. If during the course of Charlie’s adventures the player gets stuck, a hint system is available to assist. There are three levels of hints ranging from vague to specific. After using the first hint, a short timer countdown prevents the player from using them all right away. These hints are helpful for when you are trying to fully clear a level by solving all the puzzle but just cant seem to get the last one. This is not how carviar is made Beside the main puzzle solving gameplay, Stacking has a few other notable features. As mentioned before, the game can be completed without solving every puzzle. On top of that, there are level specific challenges that come in the form of using different dolls to do silly things. For example, you might be tasked with slapping 10 different dolls with the white-gloved doll or flying around the boat with five different bird dolls. These locations that Charlie must travel to are amazing. The game world of Stacking is like a combination of Fievel Goes West and LittleBig Planet with popsicle stick wood floors and cigar smokestacks to thread spool tables and playing card wall hangings forming the environment. The music is all public domain classical and post-classical piano arrangements that give the world even more charm. Wrap it up The story text of Stacking is the one major flaw of the game. Short, theatrical cutscenes are used to convey the story outside of the gameplay. These scenes use the characters like players and work very well. The problem is when there is speech a silent movie style text card must be read to understand the dialogue. There is no way to speed through the text or slow it down. So, as a fast reader you will have to wait through many slow text cards or as a slow reader you might be missing story beats. In short, Stacking is worthwhile and its relaxing, low intensity puzzle solving makes it a great game for anyone. The unique stacking mechanic and charming world it takes place in are an added bonus to the enjoyable adventure.
