Evoland was my next destination after hearing some buzz and watching some videos. It’s an RPG that progresses through the ages of RPGs. Starting with black and white pixel art, within the first 4 minutes the game shifts to a 16-bit color and sound Zelda and SNES Final Fantasy parody. Parody in the least abusive way. The adding of more complex systems and shifting to improved graphics is done tastefully and with reverence to the genre. The pacing of the game is possibly it’s biggest downfall. It is still an RPG, so seemingly endless overworld battles and a little too long dungeons crawls are present. I’m also a little worried since the most rewarding part of the game, the shifting graphical quality, is very frontloaded. More time is needed to see where the game goes, but at the moment, ten dollars does seem a little steep for the nostalgia trip.
Of course, I also played and finished BioShock Infinite. For a mostly spoiler free discussion, we talked about it on BBR.
